Catnip is an aromatic herb of the mint family which can be used as a medicinal tea for colds and fever. Interestingly, whilst Catnip is exciting to cats, it tends to have a mild sedative effect on humans.
The variety of Catnip enjoyed by cats is Catnip Nepeta Cataria. Its minty flavour is very stimluating causing them to feel a temporary euphoric high. They will experience an intense high causing them to purr, miaow and make various happy sounds whilst playing with a Catnip toy. Cats find the scent of Catnip very exciting, comforting and reassuring all at the same time. It can be very useful for cats who have moved home or had a change in their routine. It can also be helpful for a cat to have a Catnip toy to play with whilst on vacation at their local cattery.
Catnip stimulates a cat's phermonic receptors. Catnip has traditionally grown in Europe, Asia and Africa but now it is common to see it in North America. There are a number of varieties of Catnip plant and most are herbaceous perennial plants but some are annuals.
